May 3, 2009

two artists from vienna were invited to realize a project with us and stayed in lisbon for 10 days.

since both of them did a great job, we could not let them return to austria without a proper haircut (you will hear more about their work soon). sabine and jezz gave them a lesson in contemporary lisbon haircutting and they enjoyed it.

after 60 relaxed minutes with good music, they both liked their new hairstyle and one can really see the difference..

Today Inês was up for an interview:

How long are you working in the salon?
I’ve been here for 3 and a half years already, time’s been flying….

How comes that you are still here – isn’t it boring?
Not really 🙂 We always have different clients and different work to do, and after all this time it’s like working with friends and family. The salon has a very good energy, and I usually don’t get fed up with good energies. It’s hard to leave!

What would you really like to try out one day?
Hmmm…. This is a hard one…. Luckily for me, I always have clients that let me do whatever I want, so I don’t think there’s anything I would like to do but can’t. In my own case, shave my head but then I wouldn’t have any hair to play with… And I love playing with hair…..

where would you like to work (at least for a while)
In an immediate future, i would like to work in Berlin, then maybe London to visit some friends, and in a few years Tokyo and Kyoto. And in Portugal, maybe spend a while in Porto. You should never put your own country a side…

What group of people is most inspiring for you?
Definitely Punk in all its variations and Japanese Anime. And my coworkers obviously, you always learn a lot and get inspired by watching others working.

You are quite concerned about the environment which is not very typical for a “alfacinha” – do you talk to the people in your neighborhood and in your family about that?
Maybe not in my neighborhood, but to my family, friends, coworkers, to everyone that comes into my home or to wich homes I go too…Everyone I caught doing something wrong… I’m a wee bit of a dictator with it 🙂

Would you like to become the Prime Minister of Portugal one day?
No… Not really… I don’t really like politicians.  I think i would end up slapping all of those around me… Hehehe…

jezz's client happy after the haircut

jezz and her magic scissors did another innovative masterpiece: her regular customer who works in a quite conservative or at least classic environment, wanted a new, excentric cut. she wants to grow her hair but she also wants something fresh and outgoing. what a challenge for jezz.

since there was a lot of volume to cut off, jezz suggested to cut out a few waves and leave the hair on top long and even, like a curtain. the concept worked out nicely and her client now has two haircuts in one 🙂

Sabine is back!

sabine back at work

Sabine back at work

after spending a few months at home with the baby boy, Sabine is finally back to work. she was thrilled to meet her clients and colleagues again and is full of energy and creativity.
she needed a bit of a warmup on the first day, but on her second day she proved her mastership with the razor and now she’s just unstoppable. the assistants are constantly removing big piles of hair and if she continues like this we will start producing carpets soon

🙂
in the meantime, emil is enjoying some time with his dad during the shifts and is an energetic and happy little guy!

We asked Néria to answer some questions today…

How long are you working in hairport?
I started working here one year ago. I had already worked here for 3 years but I’ve stopped for two years to finish my hairdressers degree and gain some experience in other salons. after that I came back like in the popular portuguese saying “o bom filho a casa retorna” (a good child always returns).

How come you are still here – isn’t it boring?
I think it’s like an enchantment: when you’re enchanted you just can’t leave. I think the general mood here is cheerful and you can find a relaxed atmosphere and highest professionalism at the same time. What’s kept me here for such a long time is that one simply can’t get bored here. We have unique clients who have the need and the guts to come to us to change their looks and this is really hard to find somewhere else. I really like our unusual, relaxed, funny and usually very open minded customers were you meet strong individuals who are interesting, relaxed, amusing, sincere and generally very open minded.

What would you really like to try out one day?
well… so many ideas are popping into my head right now that i find it hard to decide which one to choose. What I would really like to do is a design inspired on a painting of miró 🙂

Where would you like to work, at least for a while?
I would like to work in Berlin. I think it’s a great city, and I’m already learning german. I really need to go, to live the experience of living in a foreign country… but I’ll always want to come back. Like I said before its like an enchantment…

What group of people is most inspiring for you?
I do not have a favorite style. I love my customers, they are all special. I do not really identify myself with a special style, but I sympathize with rockabilly and gothic. However, I also like the desperate housewives and the effect that some layers or strong fringes can have on them… what I really love is to give my customers some power and self-confidence so that they like themselves more than ever and leave the salon happy and satisfied. Seeing my customers happy makes me happy.

You are somehow a “country girl” from Alentejo. Can you imagine yourself going back to a village in Alentejo someday?
An interesting question… I guess it would be difficult to go back. I just love to spend holidays and rest in Alentejo. It is very complicated to live there you can’t find work. I guess i will stay close to alentejo, probably move to the Algarve one day where you have not only a high standard of living but also a fantastic seacoast, beach and sun.

Would you like to become the Prime Minister of Portugal one day? What would be your first political agenda that you would like to realise?
This question is really difficult. Well, if I’d become Prime Minister, I’d like to raise the ridiculous pensions of the lower classes. I think that everyone has the right to have a quality life at least in the last years of ones live. I’d also forbid mortgage for real estates and lower the rents for apartments to mobilize the portuguese people and to avoid that they stick to one place and one house.

How long are you working in Hairport?
nine years and nine months – quite some time!!!

How are you still here? Isn’t it boring?

actually i´m bored to death – LOL. but my bosses, colleagues and the interesting work make it really difficult to leave 🙂

What would you like to try out one day?
pubic hair design 😀 –  seriously – I usually don’t have problems to find someone who lets me try out some excentric ideas .

where would you like to work (at least for a while)?
I would choose a big city or a mega city outside of europe, like new york, rio de janeiro, sydney, singapore… this would be a  challenge!

What do you think about fashion magazine cover page girls?
I’m note sure if I understand the question, it depends on the magazine and the covergirl. generally boring and artificial puppets, but i have seen some good ones too.

Why do you like james bond movies?
fast cars, cool gadgets invented by Q, strong masculine figure who protects women, actually most of them get killed after the one-night-stand with mr. bond – LOL
